This is said to help identify struggling readers who may overly rely on recognizing words in context. HIP 3 Minute Reading Check by Canadian educator and author Paul Kropp is a one-on-one assessment tool to be used when you need a fast way to match an older reader with lower level reading material. Using incremental grade-based text selections, it suggests a grade-level result when administered orally. It is not a substitute for a full-scale reading record or comprehension assessment. Duration: 2-5 minutes, depending on the reader.

The Lexile Analyzer measures the complexity of the text by studying sentence length and word frequency. Teachers may do a Quick Book search by title, author, or ISBN. Old and new titles are often easily found and associated with a lexile level.
